André Simão

André L. Simão earned his PhD in Pharmacy from iMed.ULisboa/FFUL in 2019, focusing on mitochondria-targeting microRNAs and their role in the pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), as well as their therapeutic potential in liver and skeletal muscle. He subsequently pursued postdoctoral research on the role of microRNA-containing extracellular vesicles (EVs), released from adipose tissue, during MASLD pathogenesis and their potential as key mediators of inter-tissue communication. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Simão conducted a multicenter European study assessing the humoral immune response of two-dose COVID-19 vaccines among patients with different hepatic aetiologies from six different EU countries. In 2023, he began the MSc in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, specializing in Multi-Omics, at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Currently, he holds a UEG Research Fellowship at Biogipuzkoa HR Institute in San Sebastian, Spain.
